An Annual Survey of
Fountainhead Residency Artists

A Foreword by Kathryn Mikesell

As we release our first-ever catalog documenting the practices and experiences of the 36 artists we welcomed to Fountainhead Residency in 2022, I am filled with pride and humbled as I reflect that we are celebrating 15 years. When Dan and I started collecting art, we very quickly realized we were truly passionate about the artists, not just the work they created. Being with artists and learning about their work and inspiration filled our hearts, challenged our minds, and fed our souls. When we started Fountainhead, we wanted to create something that gave back to artists in an impactful and long-term way. We also wanted to bring more people in to experience this incredible world led by artists. Fast forward to today, and we’ve brought over 500 artists from 48 countries to live, work, and be inspired by Miami.

Fountainhead started in 2008 as a passion project funded by Dan and I. In 2018, we incorporated as a nonprofit. Our growth and sustainability are directly attributed to the financial support of foundations and individuals; engagement of alumni, curators, and scholars; leadership of our board; and dedication of our team. Fountainhead is what it is because of the family of people that supports it.

Each year we’re in awe of the talent, compassion, and commitment of the artists who join us. As Fountainhead evolves, we continue to look for new ways to elevate and support the artists who come to Miami each year. One of our latest evolutions is this publication, which celebrates the Fountaintainhead 2022 artists.

Each of the artists in this book deserves additional investigation. We hope this will serve as a starting point for you to look further into their careers and to record their names and contributions in history.

This book was made possible thanks to our incredible team and family of supporters. We were blessed to work with some of the most respected writers today who fully invested their time, knowledge, and expertise in writing each of these essays. The local Miami photographers commissioned to photograph the artists captured their essence in their portraits and documented their time at Fountainhead. Nicole Martinez was the driving force behind this book, and for this, we can’t thank her enough. Clayton Campbell, our impact consultant, instilled in the team the importance of documentation. After being with us for less than a year, Francesca Nabors was instrumental in bringing this all together. Jose Nava and the creative team at Levie Creative brought the vision to life. Klaus Prokop of Cantz printing patiently walked us through publishing this first edition. Of course, none of this would be possible without the generosity of our donors, many of whom have championed our work for several years now.

As we look ahead, we will continue to explore ways of deepening our impact on the lives and careers of artists. Artists truly do change the world. It is an honor to work to elevate their voices, value, and visibility.

With endless gratitude,
Kathryn
